Obituary for Nelson Dodd Sr.

Nelson Dodd Sr.
Nelson E. Dodd, Sr. of Magnolia, DE, fourth child of John, Sr. and Mable Sparks Dodd of Church Hill, MD was born on July 27, 1931. Affectionately known as Gene, he transitioned to his heavenly home on April 19, 2017 at the age of 85. Beginning his religious experience in Bethel AME Church in Church Hill, MD. Gene moved on to Mt. Pleasant UMC in Pondtown, MD, under the leadership of Rev. Mae Etta Moore.

Gene received his early education in a one-room school on Wilson Lane in Church Hill, and graduated from Kennard High School in Centreville, MD. After graduation, he entered the US Army where he served faithfully as a Medic in the Korean Conflict, earning the rank of TSgt. Upon discharge, Gene worked at Walter Reed Medical Center, Easton Memorial Hospital, Chestertown Brickyard, Chrysler, and Playtex Family Products (Edgewell) where he retired after 23 years of service.

Cherishing fond memories of Gene is his wife of 43 years Brenda (Ashley); son, Nelson, Jr.; granddaughter, Alexis Spady; grandsons, Leslie and Xavier Spady; great grandson, (whom he adored) JJ McIver (Thumper); three nieces, Mable Bratcher, Algie Marvel, Christine Bonds; six nephews, James Fisher, Franklin Dodd, Donald Dodd, Richard Dodd, Louis Dodd and Bobby Dodd; cousin, Lucretia Weddington; Mother-in-law, Mrs. Anna Ashley; brother-in-law, Melvin Ashley, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Ann Hawkins, Wanda Elliott, Debora Copper, Sheliah Young, and Linda Nixon; God children, Joanne Shakur, Darrell Gould and Sharay Butler; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, Gene was proceeded in death by his brothers Franklin, Sr., John and Ralph and sister Algie, and three nephews.

Gene loved listening to Gospel music, especially The Williams Brothers and Slim and the Supreme Angels. In his spare time he enjoyed his sports, especially running track, baseball, football, shooting pool, Nascar Racing and tennis (thanks to Serena Williams.) From being a bat boy for the Church Hill Red Sox, he went on to play with the Church Hill Hawks.

Gene loved his church and would do whatever he could to support it. He was a member of the United Methodist Men’s Choir, Charge Mass Choir, Mt. Pleasant Trustee Board, Mt. Pleasant Usher Board, and Mt. Pleasant Senior Choir. He even worked with the Kitchen Committee. Gene was also Lay Leader Emeritus on the charge. He was very active in the American Legion until his health began to fail, serving as the Post #2 Chaplain for many years, as well as being Memorial Team Captain. He was past president of the Kent County Crime Watch for 10 years, receiving a citation from Kent County Levy Court for his service. In the community, he was president of the Meadowbrook Acres Civic Association which helped to get the roads paved, street lights and a County Sewer System hook-up installed. Gene was also active in The Kennard Alumni Association, always trying to get people involved to help renovate the only high school for African-Americans in Queen Anne’s County until 1966. He held the position of Parlimentarian for many years and was a member of the Board of Directors.

Gene was an honest man who didn’t mind expressing himself, at all. We always knew where we stood with him.
